For “Nothing has happened yet,” Hofer and Zaugg, sought out the outer edges of photography. What they present is a sequence of found photographs from the digital archives of the Zurich police: test images originally intended to document the correct position of a radar-based speed monitoring system encompassing a radar device. Aesthetics and intuition have given way to surveillance, normalization, and knowledge; the subjectively beautiful has been upstaged by the standardization of our perception. Today’s depictions of landscapes have no use for the kind of sensitive beholder to whom nineteenth-century landscape photography was addressed. The artists’ appropriation of the images, however, brings him back to the scene.
